Massey Excursus: Gilbert

Note: This Excursus: Gilbert exists only as a pair of disconnected drafts, one handwritten, ca.1935, and the other immediately below this paragraph, typed, date unknown, but with sources parenthetically included with each dated entry; and a set of consecutively numbered source references at the very end of this page, which appear to apply to the handwritten draft.  There are also JPG images of drafts of biographical data for most of the cited Gilbert individuals.  The source records were intended to be linked in the Sources section, but none of those records are present in the remaining three-ring binders.  With the aid of genealogist Mr. Jason Bordeaux and the History Room Librarian Ms. Gretchen B. Witt, we located them in the Rowan County Public Library, Salisbury, North Carolina, where Father deposited his Holmes, Gilbert, Patrick & Blackwood genealogical notes. The most recent versions of the handwritten pages have the worst handwriting, as Father was in his 80's when he prepared those pages.

Notes on the Gilbert Family, c.1935
Source
The earliest fully proven member of this Gilbert family is the John Gilbert of Kent County, Maryland (67) who assigned the 50 acre tract called, "Gilbert's Delight," to his son Henry Gilbert in 1762 (66).  As this same "Gilbert's Delight" was granted to another John Gilbert in 1688 (68) this link appears strong enough to include the 1688 John Golbert in the line of this family as the grandfather of the John Gilbert who in 1762 assigned this same tract of land.  A John Gilbert, Will probated 1729, is also included as the probable father of John Gilbert, the 1752 assignor.  More work is needed in the records of kent & Queen Anne's Counties, Maryland to prove up these relationships and fill in missing information.
67; 66; 68
Gilbert descendants were living in Lexington, Kentucky, fairly recently, I am told.  I have been unsuccessful in arousing their interest in adding to the genealogical information included in these notes.  Work in the Fayette County, Kentucky, records would doubtless add a great deal to my information on later generations.
