Here is the original-size image of the L.OLSEN (body)/MOULSON
BROTHERS WARRANTED CAST STEEL (blade) tropical hardwood smooth plane,
8-1/2 inches long and with a 1-3/4 inch wide cutter. These dimensions
make it the equivalent in size to a Stanley No.3 metallic smoother, as
which it weighs nearly as much. The high specific gravity of the body,
the regular pattern of the dark streaks in the grain, and the large number
of small checks suggest to me that the wood is ebony. The wood is
also much harder than rosewood, whose density is about half that of ebony,
and whose dark streaks cross the growth rings at random orientations. (Return
