This strange little
wrench is very practical. It started out as a Patent Applied For
device sold by Sears, Roebuck under the Dunlap label.
The original design
is [still] awkward to use because one cannot tell from the markings on
the wrench which is the "off" versus the "on" side. It could be disastrous
to guess incorrectly.
The disgruntled
mechanic who modified the Dunlap wrench arranged it so that only one side
at a time could be applied to the head of the screw fastener. He
also added the wooden handles (made from a Meyer Thread Company spool)
to ease the stress
on his fingers. An important safety improvement, pre-OSHA in age.
