Mainly used to hold a long board against the front of a workbench to facilitate planing the board's top edge.  This example has about half its original japanning and is fully functional with nothing cracked, broken or repaired.  The hook is meant to fit through one of a series of approximately one inch holes in the 3/4 to 1 inch thick front of the bench.
The clamp can be used in other ways also, as shown below.
The patent date of  "3-16-15" on the winged screw below is for E.A. Schade's Patent No. 1,131,869.

Yes, I drilled that one inch hole in the end of the 2 by 2 while the clamp was holding it to a vertical board as shown in the picture below.
