Head length: 4-3/4 inches. The octagonal striking face is smooth. Length over handle & head: 10-1/2 inches.  This is a very small hatchet.  The handle is a recent hardwood replacement with no wedges.  The steel has been cleaned, but not with a wire brush; there are some file marks from careful dressing of dents & burs.  The cutting edge and striking face are both sound.
