Brace B&D-54
Price: $15.00 plus shipping.

The John S. Fray catalog of 1911 lists this brace as No.085, last, simplest and cheapest of all. It is in good condition, with some wear & tear to the chuck's original jaws and a broken wrist handle, which arrived done up in friction tape. I unwound the tape easily, scraped off the residue, scraped the oil & dirt off the split surfaces, and reassembled the handle in place with yellow carpenters glue. It rotates freely, but still has a tight crack as shown at left. The two glue lines are less pronounced.

The ratchet mechanism looks a lot like that of Brace B&D-52, but the spring(s) are impossible to see without disassembling the mechanism.

Maker's mark
The John S. Fray & Co. mark can be just about read at left. Bridgeport, Conn. on the opposite side of the frame.
