I got snookered; there were no balls in the appropriate place inside this chuck, even though there is a track and marks that were made by those balls at some time in the past. That will be corrected before delivery, of course. There is no sign that this brace was ever actually used, as the jaws are pristine and unmarked. The handles have some chips in the orange lacquer that is characteristic of braces made by the Millers falls Company, and the original Craftsman decal is present in only slightly worn condition on the wrist handle. The chuck is otherwise exactly like that in Brace B&D-130. For the sake of comparison, I'm including the two patents that most closely teach the inner workings of the present brace's chuck:

U.S. Patent No. 912,582
U.S. Patent No. 1,552,253

Once supplied with its full complement of balls, this is actually a Holdall model chuck, near the top of the Millers Falls line. It will hold round-shanked bits, regular square/taper shank auger bits, and even No.1 Morse taper bits, all nice and firmly.
