Jaws from a brace marked only "1201."
Chuck bears the H.V. Smith patent date, July 9, 1895.

The wire starts out on the inside of the upper jaw, then passes along the central groove of the upper jaw, passes through a hole at the left end of the upper jaw, turns back down, then around a loop, up again, and then down and up through the corresponding hole in the lower jaw, and so on.  The ends of the wire are not fastened to the jaws - they just lie in the bottom of each grooved jaw.
