Fribora-marked brace, apparently using the Davis chuck patent, but actually made by a German firm, Paul Krampen Company.
Davis patent brace made by Fribrora

L.L. Davis US Patent No. 432,180L.L. Davis US Patent No. 432,180L.L. Davis US Patent No. 432,180L.L. Davis US Patent No. 432,180

The chuck design seen at left comes pretty close to matching the drawings of US Patent 432,180 (excerpts above) granted to Leonard L. Davis on July 15, 1890, but the actual brace was made with the quality mark,
FRIBORA under a Deutsches Reich patent (deduced from the D.R.P. marking) by the Paul Krampen Company of Germany.  These markings appear to make this brace an exception to mysupposed rule that German braces generally copied expired US patents.

I found the above information about the manufacturer at Wolgang Jordan's Holzbearbeitung mit Handwerkzeugen website.  There is a wealth of catalogs,
information, company names & addresses, and who knows what else in Wolfgang's webpage !
