Aid for Identifying Mazon Creek Fossils
Professor
Lesquereux listed the scientific names of the nearly two hundred
fossils that he thought to be characteristic to the Mazon Creek
area of Illinois. My grandfather, George Langford, Senior, included the Francis Creek
shale with this district, which overlies the coal in the surface mines
of Will County, and which he termed the Wilmington Coal Flora.
In the table below I have attempted to simplify the task of finding
suitable figures of the various fossils from Lesquereux's Description of the Coal Flora of the Carboniferous Formation of Pennsylvania and throughout the United States and from his earlier essays on the coal-formation and its fossils of 1858 (reprinted in 1868) that were published in The Geology of Pennsylvania, a Government Survey, by Henry Darwin Rogers. Henry Darwin Rogers was brother to William Barton Rogers, who founded my alma mater, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and co-founded the American Association for the Advancement of Science, of which I am a member. Links in the mini-tables below point to one or more of the following sources: The link "LL" points to figues or discriptions in Lesquereux's works; "GL" points to the fossil names and photographs in Grandfather's manuscript, linked above. That manuscript commemorates the assistance of my father, George Langford, Junior, in collecting those fossils, many, if not most of which, Grandfather gave to the Illinois State Museum, whose links are marked, "ISM." The Smithsonian Institution has a page of excellent photographs by Jack Wittry of Mazon Creek type specimens; I have not succeeded in making links to the individual species from this page, however. Jack has also prepared an excellent printed catalog of Mazon Creek fossils (copyright 2006), which is referenced on the Smithsonian's Mazon Creek webpage. "Where is it now ?" you might ask. Mary R, Carman has published, "Catalog of Type, Figured, and Referred Mazon Creek Fossils in Private Collections," in Fieldiana, Geology New Series No.19, published by the Field Museum of natural History, Chicago, Illinois in 1990. The catalog lists only specimens held in private collections, however. The rest are either lost or in museums, such as the large Mazon Creek collection at the Field Museum, and the Illinois State Museum's collection of Mazon Creek specimens. I hope that this page, shoehorned as it is into Professor Lesquereux's fine work, will help those of you how are trying to identify and learn about the early history of Lesquereux's fossil studies in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and elsewhere. George Langford, III, editor.
