Dear Sir:
I have your letter of the 3rd inst.  My sister, Mrs. Hough, a few days previous sent me your letter to her asking a sketch of my father's life.
In this letter to Mrs. Hough, you mention your wife, nee Miss Anna Saunders of Bolivar, Mo.  I remember her very distinctly away back in 1852, and her father as well.  I believe Mr. Eberly Wilson of Sarcoxie was her uncle.  The Saunders family of Sarcoxie were quite intimate with our family.  Mrs. Amelia Saunders was particularly a friend of  my mother's.  These children of the Sarcoxie Saunders were nearly all schoolmates of mine.  Tuck Saunders married a daughter of the late Judge Ritchie of Newton Co., Mo.  Capt. McAfee, a former law partner of Governor Phelps and myself, and who yet abides in the land of the living and is here in Springfield, married another daughter of Judge Ritchie, and I have frequently met the children of Tuck Saunders while they were visiting here.  I think too, in ante-bellum days I frequently saw your wife, then Miss Saunders, when she was a girl at Sarcoxie.
The Wilson families at Boliver and at Sarcoxie, and the Saunders families of the two towns visited together quite often.
In 1852 while going from Sarcoxie to Boonville with my father to buy goods, we stopped for a day at Bolivar at the house of Mr. Israel W. Davis and I remember seeing Miss Anna Saunders, or think I do, on that occasion.  While but natural, it yet seems strange how the memory of one little incident awaken such a train of recollections.
