Appendix VII
Massey Family of Ely

Judge Massey writes about the possible ancestry of the Nicholas Massey, Will 24 Sep.1688, probated 11 Apr.1693, Dorchester Co., Md.:
"Nicholas, by my theory - for not proven, was probably from the Isle of Ely (not an Island) which is now the northern part of Cambridgeshire in England, laying due North of London.  By the time of his immigration the use of Nicholas had ceased in its popularity in Cheshire, the seat of the undoubted beginning of this family.
About the year 1536 the first Nicholas in the Isle of Ely had led his brothers (except Alexander) in the move from Manchester, in Lancashire and on the Mersey River, to Isle of Ely ...  known is that a number of Marshey families were settled in the shire of Isle of Ely, and that the name of Nicholas was popular among members of this family. ...
"...  Isle of Ely at time of Nicholas' emigration ...  was not an island ... it was low lying land in a swampy area ... containing high points of land ... the largest of which was called Isle of Ely ... site of the oldest complete cathedral in England ... still standing."
