This nice little
plane sadly has a cracked cheek, as shown below. The crack is short and
barely visible, but a crack nevertheless. Surely this is the
result of clamping the plane upside down in a vise in order to use it as
a hand-operated jointer for a small workpiece. The crack should not
open unless you repeat this mistake or drop it on its side.
If you wish to put
this good-looking plane to work (three patent dates, 95% japanning, correct
blade) it would be a good idea to lap the sole or dress the front of the
mouth
to restore the
plane's performance in gnarly wood or against the grain.
