scratches the inside of a glass tube in order to enable breaking the tube
to an exact length to fit the visual level indicator of a steam boiler.
The liquid could be oil (as in a drip feed or displacement lubricator)
or water.
This example is
in fine condition, with the possible exception
that the fixing
screw for the sliding stop may be a replacement.
