Chaplin's
Improved jointer plane.
Price: $225.00
plus shipping.
P&S-01
This immense, twenty-four-inch-long
plane is a joy to use
because the large
bottom corrugations eliminate frictional suction. The blade adjustments
use only levers - not screws - and work smoothly to adjust both the cutting
depth and side-to-side alignment of the blade.
The blade is marked,
Chaplin's
Improved, as is the left cheek,
along with the
patent dates; the latter markings do not photograph well. The words, Chaplin's
Improved, are cast into the bed in a circle around the knob. The original
thick japanning is about 95%, even inside the corrugations.
Note that the top
of the bed has undulations that follow the outline of the bottom corrugations
in order to maximize strength and minimize weight. The hard rubber (gutta
percha) tote is perfect; the black-finished wooden knob has had its [wood]
threads stripped and is a little insecure. A proper soft wooden plug
glued into the hole and re-threaded with the original screw would fix it
permanently.
There is one spot
of deep pitting along the left-hand junction of cheek and sole next to
the tote; the rest of the plane bottom and sides are in excellent condition,
with a dark patina.
