This old brace
was purpose-made by a bygone blacksmith to drill big holes with
square-shanked auger bits. He patterned the brace after the
Spofford split-chuck design. Judging from their appearance, he
even made the thumbscrews shown in the inset below ! The pad is
just a loose round knob with no bearings, so there's the implicit
expectation that the bits one uses have fully functional screw tips to
draw them into the work. |
