German manufacturers had an unbeatable patent strategy;
they copied designs found in expired patents, even when no American
manufacturer ever put those designs into practice during the lifetimes
of the patents. They could thereby avoid patent
infringement. This brace goes one step farther. They gave
the chuck four jaws, albeit arranged much like the Barber
and Peck
patents, but with two pairs of jaws to get some sort of self-centering
effect like a three jaw chuck. About 75% of the finish remains on
the hardwood handles, and the nickel plating is at 99%. The brace is
mechanically in new, unused condition. It should work great with
auger bits. However, I doubt that the extra pair of jaws will
make it reliably hold round shanked bits. The wrist handle has
interesting bearings which shield the wood from wear.
