This
brace carries the stamped issuance dates of both Obed Peck's chuck
patent and Caspar Reising's ratchet patent (drawings below) but the
corroded condition of those surfaces precludes making photographs. The
walnut handles are both intact but have become stained very dark, not
to mention the "oil hole" in the top of the pad ... Mechanically, the
brace is in good condition, with the metal parts functioning well.
Someone has repaired the head's quill, with its location now set by
what looks like a nail.
